Lake Heron Astrophotography Milky Way Laurie Winter

Christchurch City is the largest city in the South Island. It has some amazing photography in its own right - for instance the New Brighton Pier, Governors Bay or the Port Hills for both sunrises and sunsets. The drive to nearby Akaroa is beautiful and the small township is a lovely spot for a day trip.

A short drive from Christchurch provides a huge number of amazing photography locations, such as Arthur's Pass, nearby waterfalls and Castle Hill. Arthur's Pass is frequented by Waimakariri Kea, which for me is always a perfect excuse to visit. Kaikoura to the north is an amazing place, renowned for its whales, seals and bird life, and somewhere you can capture snow-capped mountains and wild ocean in the same shot.

Inland, the Ashburton Lakes area is stunning and has become one of my favourite areas. Lake Heron is a perfect spot for some Milky Way photography and nearby Lake Camp and Lake Coleridge provide some stunning mountain reflections at sunrise or sunset.
